- My friend FAXed USRobotics an order for a 33.6 upgrade to his external
- USRobotics Sportster 28.8 Vi with VoiceView, and received a confirmation FAX
- from USR confirming the order and the modem's serial number. This was long
- ago. This week, he received a Sportster V.FC to V.34 upgrade. Shrugging, he
- tried the PROM anyway; it didn't work.
-
- I'm not really surprised; I sent e-mail to support@usr.com asking if there was
- such a thing as an external Courier 28.8 Vi with DSVD, and whether it was
- available in Canada (no local suppliers seem to have it or believe that they
- can order it). In stead of sending me e-mail saying yes or no, I get a phone
- message from a USR distributor who left a phone number where they've never
- heard of him.
-
- Last year, it took a couple of months to get a Courier 28.8 repaired; USR US
- told us to send it a Canadian repair shop, who told us that they just shipped
- the modem to the US, where the motherboard was replaced. This is a real pain
- in the ass for a BBS operator, but it's a reason not to recommend USR for any
- important task, such as the corporate applications that I thought were the
- Courier's target market.
-
- The year before, it took many months and weekly phone calls to various levels
- of management at USR to get the modem for which they had already graciously
- accepted payment.
-
- You know, I can't recall a single good experience with USR service over the
- past several years. It's like they're out to prove that you can make a
- fortune on a decent modem even if you do everything else incredibly poorly.
- They've obviously outgrown the effectiveness of their support organization.

- Capitalism is a cold-hearted system which guards the interests of whoever's
- at the top, yet hypocritically claims that it offers everyone a fair shot.
- So is every other system ever put in place by man.
